This is how the Phoenix Metals approach works

Phoenix Metals develops low-temperature hydrometallurgical technologies to recover vanadium and other valuable materials from industrial waste such as steel slag, refinery residues, and marine waste. Vanadium electrolyte is a crucial raw material for vanadium redox flow batteries. These batteries are seen as a promising solution for large-scale energy storage for grid operators, industrial clusters, data centres, and renewable energy projects. Through this, Phoenix Metals stimulates the energy transition while aiming to limit environmental damage.

Thanks to their innovative and sustainable processes, they render the use of harmful chemicals redundant, minimise carbon emissions and ensure that critical metals remain part of a circular economy.

"Along with existing European battery manufacturers, we want to contribute to a fully European ecosystem for energy storage.”

That is why we are investing in Phoenix Metals

Senior business developer Birgitta Kramer: “The unique thing about Phoenix Metals is that they render steel slag harmless whilst recovering valuable raw materials for the energy transition. By extracting the critical raw material vanadium from this residual stream, the company reduces the dependence on the import of raw materials from outside Europe. Furthermore, the technology is significantly more energy-efficient than existing alternatives. As such, Phoenix Metals contributes not only to making the steel industry in North Holland more sustainable, but also to greater security of raw material supply for Europe. It is precisely this combination of economic, ecological and geopolitical impact that makes Phoenix Metals an attractive investment for us.”
