This is how Droppie's approach works

Waste separation and recycling can be much improved. Particularly in urban areas, consumers are held back by a lack of convenience, a lack of clarity about what happens to their waste, and a negative user experience. Droppie focuses on behavioural change among consumers. They collect waste in a smart way via special recycling shops, where consumers receive money for plastic packaging, textiles, cooking oil, electronic equipment, and deposit items, which they return separately. The technology behind each location is the Dropbot: a An AI-powered intake machine that classifies collected material based on image recognition, weighs the material, and then automatically assigns a reward to the consumer via the Droppie app. Consumers can keep these rewards themselves or donate them to a charity. In this way, Droppie contributes to more and higher-quality recycling.

“As a chemist, I see daily how our economy is stuck on raw material scarcity. Our dependence on primary raw materials is unsustainable, both ecologically and geopolitically. With Droppie, we are building a domestic raw material flow that breaks this dependence and enables brands and producers to meet their PPWR obligations.”

Investment Manager Lotte Nolten-van Hoek: “With 490kg of waste per person in the Netherlands each year and only 60% of waste being sorted correctly, there is a clear challenge in improving the effectiveness of waste sorting and recycling. By collecting waste separately, Droppie ensures that high-quality new raw materials can be produced from waste. Take plastic, for example. The less new plastic we need to produce, the less polluting crude oil we require. At the same time, this makes us less dependent on importing this fossil fuel from abroad. That is why we are keen to invest in companies such as Droppie that contribute to a more circular economy and more sustainable production.”
