WASTE-FREE WEEK - What if you want to eat something quick, but still healthy? Until recently, you had to rely on vending machines for this, often with an assortment of mostly unhealthy food. Especially later in the evening in, for example, hospitals, offices or train stations. Health Food Wall wants to offer fresh, healthy food 24/7, especially in places where this supply is very limited.

For this, the company uses the same type of vending machines, but then filled with fresh products. With smart data-driven software and 'intelligent fridges', food waste is prevented as much as possible.

Founder of Health Food Wall Anouk Snelders has a background in dietetics and has developed a passion for healthy food as a chef in various lunchrooms. “People want to make healthier choices, but to really support that, the threshold has to be lower. Our intelligent 'fridges' offer the speed and the convenience of vending machines, but are filled with fresh, healthy food and drinks instead of unhealthy products. Fortunately, because filled cookies and bags of chips do not really contribute to the vitality of students, travelers or office workers.”

Shelf life point of attention

Machines from Health Food Wall. Oamong others at Schiphol, in office buildings and hospitals such as Erasmus Medical Center. This number is growing rapidly. “Although the fresh and ready-made assortment tempts people to choose the healthy option more often, shelf life remains a point of attention for us. All products in the vending machines have a shelf life of five days after production. At the same time, customers expect the vending machines at all locations to always have sufficient stock.”

Preventing waste with data and smart software

“To prevent waste, we use the data we get from the 'fridges' for the most optimal inventory management. We also use that data to offer discounts to encourage customers to buy products that are on their 'best before' date. We have also supplemented our range with products from external parties with a longer shelf life, which reduces the chance of losses.”

Research and pilots for even less waste

In order to prevent even the last waste, Health Food Wall is conducting research and is further improving its data-driven software. The company recently received a voucher for this from the foundation Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling (Together Against Food Waste). “We recently started the pilot 'dynamic discounting'. We are trying to find out when is the right time to discount a product so that it is still bought and not thrown away. We are also working on a mobile app with which we can offer discounts on a personal level. In this way, we may be able to tempt regular customers to buy a juice at a discount that would no longer be good the next day. To be continued!”
