Nuclear power reinvented: from waste to energy

The global need for energy demands a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions without ignoring the growing demand. Nuclear power offers a reliable and low-CO2 solution, but the waste problem is a major stumbling block. Thorizon responds to this with their innovative molten salt reactor that is not only more cost-efficient due to its modularity, but also uses existing nuclear waste as fuel. This tackles the waste problem while creating a new, sustainable source of energy.

This is how Thorizon works

Thorizon has developed a molten salt reactor that works with specially designed cartridges. These cartridges contain nuclear fuel dissolved in molten salt. Controlled fission processes in the reactor vessel generate heat, which can be used for industrial processes such as hydrogen production and chemical processes but can also be converted into clean electricity. This technology offers inherently safe operation: in case of disruptions, the process stops automatically, without external intervention.

The impact

The application of the Thorizon reactor makes an important contribution to the energy transition both locally and internationally:

● Reducing radioactive waste: The reactor uses existing nuclear waste as fuel, reducing the amount and harmfulness of the waste.
● CO2 reduction: By producing CO2-free electricity or heat for, greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced.
● Local economic stimulus: The development and realisation of the reactor stimulate employment in the region and promote cooperation with knowledge institutions and industry partners.

Collaboration and support

Thorizon works with various partners, including universities, research institutes and industrial parties. Funding from the PDENH fund since 2022 has been crucial for scaling up the technology and developing prototypes. Thanks to this collaboration, Thorizon is taking important steps towards the realisation of the first operational molten salt reactor in Europe, planned for 2032.

With this innovation, Thorizon demonstrates that nuclear energy can not only be safe and sustainable, but also contribute to a circular economy where waste is no longer a burden, but a valuable raw material for the future.
