Together, the nine regional development companies (ROMs) have contributed more than €1 billion to innovation projects and business development in the Netherlands in recent years. Our combined efforts have helped more than 2,500 SMEs to advance their innovations in innovation, investment and internationalisation since 2021.

Sustainable growth from the region

As the implementing organisation for the province of North Holland, ROM InWest contributes to strengthening the regional innovation ecosystem. Together with the other ROMs, we ensure that entrepreneurs have access to knowledge, capital and a strong network. Our joint effort contributes to higher labour productivity, strengthens the earning capacity of the Dutch economy and helps increase the strategic autonomy of the Netherlands. ROM Netherlands president Wendy de Jong: “Regional development companies, as booster, connector and financier, grow innovative entrepreneurship from the region into national and international success.”

Results 2024

In 2024, €236 million was invested through 538 innovation projects. This brings the ROMs' combined contribution to innovation since 2021 to €1 billion. In addition, € 215 million was invested in 367 companies in 2024, growing the total portfolio to 1,137 innovative companies. Also, 155 foreign companies were attracted, together investing more than €2 billion in the Dutch economy. These investments will create more than 4,500 high-quality jobs in the coming years.

Examples from the country

In each region, ROMs are making concrete contributions to breakthrough innovations. In North Holland, the DOPS with their Direct Carbon Immobilisation (DCI) technology. Residual streams such as household waste, organic material or industrial by-products are a headache for many companies, especially given the issues surrounding CO2 emissions. DOPS converts waste that is difficult to process into reusable products such as synthetic gas (syngas) and activated carbon. And it does so with much lower carbon emissions than traditional techniques.

Working together on transitions

The ROMs“ successful approach: funded by region, state and Europe, enables them to accelerate social transitions and realise sustainable earning power. De Jong: ”The ROMs have long shown that their approach works. The innovative power they tap into is important for putting Dutch companies on the international map. Continuing and strengthening that working method is of great importance."
