Lgem produces and rents photobioreactors (also known as PBRs) for the so-called autotrophic cultivation of microalgae on an industrial scale; a biological process based on photosynthesis under the influence of (sun)light and CO. Food supplements, cosmetics and animal feed (aquaculture) are currently the most important applications of microalgae.
Lgem mainly for food
The fast-growing global market for microalgae-based products that we at Lgem focus on is estimated to reach €56 billion in 2027,” says Bas Swildens, CEO at Lgem. “This growth is mainly in the food industry: microalgae are widely used in the production of functional foods and food supplements because of their rich content of essential nutrients and antioxidants. Our portfolio consists of sixty percent of customers and prospects who (will) produce food-related products based on microalgae.”
“Leader in algae cultivation technology”
ROM InWest acquires a stake in Lgem because the company can be a driver of innovative applications of microalgae for more sustainable and healthy products with its photobioreactors in the food, animal feed, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. “Since its foundation in 2006, Lgem has been a global leader in the field of technology for algae cultivation for commercial purposes,” says Janet Nieboer, CEO of ROM InWest. “Thanks to their technological solutions and knowledge of algae cultivation, they are uniquely positioned to make the global food supply, aquaculture, animal feed, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries healthier and more sustainable quickly and on a large scale.”
