The health of our oceans is under pressure worldwide. Climate change, pollution and overfishing threaten the marine ecosystem, while the need for reliable ocean research increases. Sea Ranger Service tackles this challenge with an innovative and sustainable approach. By using sailing ships for maritime research and training young people to become future-proof maritime professionals, Sea Ranger Service makes a valuable contribution to ocean conservation and the development of a sustainable blue economy.

This is how Sea Ranger Service works

Sea Ranger Service has developed a unique concept combining sailing, research and education. Using sailing vessels, the company carries out important monitoring activities for offshore and maritime projects, as a sustainable alternative to fossil-powered ships. At the same time, young people aged between 18 and 29 are given the opportunity to be trained as Sea Ranger. They gain valuable sailing experience and obtain nautical certificates, giving them a flying start in a maritime career.

Sea Ranger Service organises bootcamps in the Netherlands and the UK. To become a Sea Ranger, participants first go through the Sea Ranger Service Bootcamp: an intensive adventure-based training programme focused on building physical resilience, teamwork and personal development through practical challenges and skills training.

The impact

Sea Ranger Service's innovative approach has a wide range of positive effects:
● CO₂ reduction: using sailing vessels instead of conventional motor vessels saves a significant amount of CO₂ emissions every year.
● Youth employment: Training young people and providing work experience in the maritime sector creates new opportunities and future prospects for the next generation.
● Biodiversity protection: Activities such as seagrass field restoration, shipwreck monitoring, hydrographic survey, critical ocean sampling and research activities contribute to a healthier ocean, biodiversity protection and better understanding of marine ecosystem.

Collaboration and support

The construction of Sea Ranger Service's first own sailing vessel was made possible thanks to funding from PDENH, Triodos and Nesec. Together with the current charter vessel, Fantastikeo, the capacity for research and training has been significantly increased and Sea Ranger Service can continue to grow beyond the Netherlands. Sea Ranger Service proves that innovative, sustainable maritime solutions are perfectly compatible with social impact and economic growth. Together, they are setting course for a future in which ocean protection is not only necessary, but also offers opportunities for the next generation.
