Overproduction of stuff leads to unnecessary pollution

The production of goods accounts for about 70% of the global CO2-emissions. This pollution is largely unnecessary, because many items are used at most a few times a year. And that while someone else could and would have used them. Many people find a circular economy and small footprint important, but miss ways to give substance to this, without having to make concessions.

Rent items with or without membership

BIYU (Bob Is Your Uncle) is an online platform where you can rent products once or with a membership that you often only use for certain occasions. Think of a high-pressure cleaner, sound box or pancake pan. For a fixed amount per month or a few euros per hour you get access to the entire catalogue. The items can be picked up or BIYU brings the items to you for a fee and/or they are picked up after use. The latter distinguishes BIYU from other 'item rental companies' such as Gamma and Boels and removes an obstacle, especially when renting large equipment.

Investment ROM InWest

Because sharing goods is the best way to reduce the consumption of consumer goods without giving up much, ROM InWest invested in BIYU from its Transition Fund. After successfully setting up the first hub in Amsterdam, BIYU will expand to other cities in the Netherlands and beyond in the coming years. In this way, 'temporary ownership' will become the standard everywhere for consumer products that you don't need that often.
