S4 has developed an advanced energy storage system in Heerhugowaard that consists of a combination of batteries and innovative flywheels. Since August 2019, a 9 MW installation has been operated by the special project company S4 Ancillary Services Noord-Holland BV. This installation is used on the FCR, aFFR, mFFR and imbalance market, and thus supports grid management and contributes to a more robust energy network.
S4's innovative systems deliver measurable and sustainable impact:
• Reduction of CO2 emissions: S4's installations make it possible to increasingly use solar and wind energy, thereby reducing the use of fossil fuels
• Optimization of sustainable energy sources: Solar and wind energy are used more effectively, allowing more sustainable energy to be deployed.
• Economic stimulus in North Holland: The project generates employment and innovation in the region and supports the local energy transition.
The realization of the energy storage project in Noord-Holland was possible thanks to cooperation with regional grid operators and energy companies. Thanks to a loan and a shareholding from PDENH in the project BV (S4 AS NH), S4 was able to build and commission this innovative installation. In September 2024, PDENH relinquished its shareholding by exercising a put option. With its innovative storage solutions, S4 contributes to a more stable, sustainable and efficient electricity grid, and the company takes an important step towards a clean energy future.
