From challenge to opportunity
Yet, these challenges also offer opportunities. The transition to more renewable energy makes us less dependent on fossil fuels and thus increases economic independence in an uncertain world. ROM InWest therefore sees the energy transition not only as a necessity, but above all as an opportunity for sustainable growth and innovation in a strong region.
Focus: smart energy systems
After analyzing the technologies within the energy transition, ROM InWest has now determined that smart energy systems – also called Smart Energy Hubs (SEH) – are the key to acceleration. These systems combine hardware and software to make the energy grid smarter, more efficient and more flexible.
In North Holland, there is already a solid foundation for this. Think of innovative energy companies and digitalizing industries that invest in smart Energy Management Systems (EMS) to optimize energy consumption and reduce CO₂ emissions. The region has promising initiatives that are ready for scaling up – but the necessary financing is often difficult to find in the market.
ROM InWest accelerates the energy transition
To further develop the energy transition in North Holland, ROM InWest focuses on three pillars:
- Ecosystem development
We map the network of Smart Energy Hubs and strengthen the ecosystem around it. We stimulate collaboration, connect parties and link innovative startups and scale-ups to promising projects. - Venture Development
We support innovative energy companies with advice, programs and events. Our goal: to help entrepreneurs transform their solutions into scalable, viable business models. - Financing
We improve the financing climate by actively attracting investors, working with co-financiers and increasing our visibility. We also invest in projects that are already further developed, but just need that final push to become financeable.
Future opportunities
ROM InWest continues to listen to what the market needs. During roadshows and discussions with entrepreneurs, we signal where we can make a difference – such as in the scaling up of e-fuels and biofuels, or in heat transition projects where the market is not yet moving. There too, we look for ways to accelerate the energy transition with public funds.
