From reactive to proactive<\/h4>\n

The MedTech scale-up Healthplus.ai<\/a> has developed an AI system for hospitals that allows them to predict the risk of post-operative complications for each individual patient based on existing data from the Electronic Patient Record. \u201cThis allows care teams to anticipate these risks and even take preventive action to avoid complications in a patient,\u201d Bart explains. \u201cThat saves the patient a lot of misery and it saves hospitals a lot of money.\u201d Bart knows this better than anyone, having worked as an anaesthesiologist, intensivist and clinical pharmacologist himself. He continues: \u201c40% of the cost of healthcare goes on surgical care. A third of that amount goes on treating unwanted side effects of treatment. These are huge sums of money. Post-operative infections alone cost \u20ac500 billion a year worldwide. With our risk prediction, hospitals can better anticipate these risks. That makes care much cheaper and it is better for the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n

Focus helps growth<\/h4>\n

Bart: \u201cWe can most likely predict the risks for all complications. But if you want to convince a hospital to use our AI system, you have to offer a clear, long-term financial incentive. For that, we called 200 surgeons and asked them what they see as the biggest clinical problem. Of those, 199 said: infections. We then specifically calculated the financial aspect of that, allowing us to present a concrete story to hospitals, substantiated with figures. We then introduced a geographical focus by starting only in the Netherlands. That focus provided an overview.\u201d The sharp focus on a clear, simpler AI model helped Healthplus.ai build trust. This made it possible to start in a healthy way, although that still involved a lot of work.<\/p>\n

Wider rollout thanks to investment<\/h4>\n

The company is now slowly working towards broader expansion. Healthplus.ai recently raised \u20ac2.3 million for this expansion. Bart: \u201cMedTech companies like ours have a longer time-to-market and higher risk than companies in many other sectors, partly due to CE certification and clinical trials.\". With the entry of ROM InWest as an investor<\/a> it would become more attractive for other investors to enter this growth phase. Thanks to ROM InWest, we were able to raise the amount needed to take new steps.\u201d<\/p>\n

Building the organisation<\/h4>\n

Bart: \u201cThis investment gives us the scope to accelerate our commercial activities and to further build our organisation. The challenge with this is: how do you obtain and maintain a good company culture? How do you recruit the right people who form an ingredient for our company's success? How do you test whether they fit the culture you envision? How do you retain good people? That's important. With ROM InWest, we are currently mainly looking at: who is in your network, both within healthcare and beyond? You can also learn to run a business from companies outside healthcare, for example from other\" ROM InWest portfolio companies<\/a>. For the MBA I completed, I also consciously chose not to do a \u2018healthcare MBA\u2019. Specifically to be able to learn from others in a broad sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

To pass on the fire<\/h4>\n

Bart is proud of what the Healthplus.ai team has achieved so far. \u201cRecently, we were in a Dutch hospital with a department of 40 surgeons and junior doctors. While we were telling our story, we saw at least half of those present already making the connection. We are succeeding in conveying our passion that hospitals can transition from purely diagnostic work to prognostic work, including when it comes to postoperative complications. And that we can also start treating those complications earlier. We saw it click, and that is very motivating for our team. Because all our people really have one thing in common: we all want to make an impact for better and more affordable healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n
